STATION
is a small two roomed red brick building, a former fireboat station and
railway lodge, constructed in the mid 1890's on Bristol Docks. During
the Blitz the firemen sailed around the floating harbour in a boat named
the Pyronaut, extinguishing fires with water pumped directly from the
river.
Launched
in April 2000, the building now provides opportunities for artists to
develop an intimate dialogue with it. There is an evolving programme whereby
each artist works without the constraint of time. STATION provides a context
for artists and audience to meet in a spontaneous way, since the front
door faces the cobbled dockside where passers by are in abundance. Our
vision is to bring artists closer to the public and the public closer
to artists; particularly the working process of artists who work on-site
in response to a place.
We
offer a context where questions can be asked about the role of the artist
in society.
STATION
is supported Arts Council England. Previous
funding for STATION include Arnolfini, The Henry Moore Foundation, INIVA
and South West Screen.
